Sandy began skating with the Winter Club as a child in 1955. As a competitive
ice dancer she and her partner were Midwestern Champions, and earned
several medals in National competition. She began her coaching career with
the Winter Club in 1967. In 1976, just 9 years after beginning coaching
she had a team placing 2nd at the National Figure Skating Championships in
the Championship division, qualifying them to compete in the 1976 Olympic
Games in Innsbruck, Austria; and the World Championships in Goteburg,
Sweden. The following year she coached one of her dance teams to win
the National Junior Dance Championships.
Throughout her career she has
coached at Regional, Sectional, International, World, and Olympic
competitions.
Her commitment to
quality coaching is evident in her continuing involvement with the
Professional Skaters Association (the largest organization of ice
skating professionals in the world). She was elected their first woman
President in 1982 and served two, three year terms. In 1996 she received the
Honorary Member, Lifetime Achievement Award.
Since 1985, Sandy has served as the Figure Skating
Director for Special Olympics
International, updating the rules to be used at the Special Olympics
World Winter Games that are held every 4 years. She has also been the
Technical Director for the World Games in Reno, Nevada; Salzburg, Austria;
Toronto, Ontario Canada; and Anchorage, Alaska.
As Coaching Director, Sandy keeps the Winter Club Basic Skills Program running smoothly.
Skaters of all ages enjoy learning to skate through this group instruction
every Wednesday night.
Sandy and her assistants apply PSA approved teaching
methods, and recognize individual progress through the US Figure Skating's
(the National Governing Body) "Basic Skills" program. Sandy also serves on
the Basic Skills committee and was one of the founders of that program.
It was that committee who established the learning program, skills and now
skill competitions.
Sandy
